MANUFACTURING: Globe Speciality Metals announced shutdown last week.
NIAGARA FALLS — Agencies at the state, county and city levels intend to meet with the corporate ownership of a local silicon plant to discuss any possibility of its operations restarting.
A similar strategy was used by officials the last time Ferroglobe PLC, which owns Globe Speciality Metals, Inc., temporarily halted operations on Highland Avenue in 2003. The plant became active again five years later with a substantial government assistance package.
After last week’s shutdown announcement, Ferroglobe’s Chief Financial Officer Phillip Murnane said the company “suspended operations at the Niagara Falls plant indefinitely in response to evolving market conditions,” in an emailed statement.
