Crews expect to start construction later this week on the state Department of Transportation’s planned “road diet” for South Union Road in Amherst and Williamsville, one of several road projects beginning or expanding now.
The South Union project restripes a section of the street between Wehrle Drive and Main Street to reduce the road from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, plus a median turning lane.
Some residents opposed the proposed changes to South Union, but proponents say such redesigns lead to fewer crashes, reduced speeds and other benefits.
