City of Binghamton begins project to certify floodwalls and levees with FEMA

Binghamton is the first municipality in Broome County to announce a project is in motion to have its floodwalls and levees certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The first phase of the project was approved by the Binghamton City Council in October 2019 and will cost $183,529.

Mayor Richard David said Thursday if the 6.7 miles of floodwalls and levees become certified to meet FEMA’s requirements, new flood insurance maps would show adequate protection to homeowners.

David said the funds for this project have been set aside in a reserve account.
