GAINES — Dollar General stores pop up in this region, and across the nation, at such a rapid pace, sometimes there is not time for a ribbon cutting or grand opening.
However, in Orleans County, a group of historians and residents are looking to put the brakes on a project by the popular discount retailer.
The base of the controversy surrounding a Dollar General, is the fact the corporation is looking to locate across the street from the Cobblestone Church. The Cobblestone Society reached out to the Zaremba Group, who will be owning and developing the land for Dollar General. On Thursday afternoon, the two had a meeting to discuss the future of the site, and the company doing the building was handed a petition against building the Dollar General at the proposed location. Residents also asked if the store could be built at a different location.
