HERKIMER — The Herkimer County Legislature on Wednesday afternoon selected the various companies that will build a jail on state Route 28 in the village of Herkimer, but it failed to choose a company for a jail security system.
During a joint meeting of the Public Safety and Ways and Means committees — prior to the full legislative meeting — there was discussion about which company to use for a security system for the jail. The committees were looking at purchasing a system through Black Creek or Cornerstone.
Both were rejected.
Herkimer County Sheriff Chris Farber said the current jail uses Black Creek for a jail management system and he doubted the Cornerstone system would integrate into it, though contractors said it would.
“Black Creek is the superior jail management system in New York state,” Farber said. “It is very important for us to have a high quality system.”
According to bids, there is a $388,000 difference between the Black Creek and Cornerstone systems. Farber acknowledged the discrepancy but said the Legislature needs to think of the quality of what it is getting.
