Highway workers call for road funding

ALBANY — Highway superintendents and road workers from across the state are urging lawmakers to increase the amount of money in the proposed state budget for local roads, bridges and culverts, saying upstate infrastructure needs its fair share.

Sen. Tom O’Mara, R-58, and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, R-132, joined the hundreds of highway department workers and a bipartisan group of state representatives for a rally on the Million Dollar staircase in the state Capitol on March 4. The group rallied for the eighth consecutive year as part of its Local Roads Matter advocacy campaign to fight for increased funding in the state’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program, PAVE-NY and BRIDGE-NY programs established in 2016.
