New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation recently accepted the results an environmental quality review conducted by American Rock Salt and granted the company a permit to move forward with a 1,700-acre, underground expansion at its Hampton Corners mine in Groveland.
The permit will allow the company to immediately start mining an estimated 40 million tons of salt west of its existing mine. The expansion, which is expected to add between 10 and 20 years to the mine’s life, will make use of existing mine shafts and won’t require above ground construction.
Joe Bucci Jr., environmental, health and safety manager for American Rock Salt, said the company tailored the expansion to minimize environmental impacts and promote “good stewardship and sustainability.”
