Town eyes pedestrian safety on Southside

The Town of Oneonta is working toward creating a safer Southside for pedestrians and vehicles.*

Oneonta Town Supervisor Robert Wood said the town is looking into creating sidewalks that would run on the north side of route 23/28 from Lettis Highway to Aldi, and another one from the highway to BJ’s.

Construction may be started later this year and installation sometime in 2021, he said.

Wood said the town requested action from the state in March 2019, shortly after a death and a serious injury of two pedestrians near the highway. In early January, the town heard back from the state Department of Transportation which “indicated that they have a $3 million project to provide traffic improvements and sidewalks in the Rt 23/28 corridor,” according to last month’s town board meeting minutes.
