Vassar College’s plan for hotel, institute faces zoning hurdles, mixed public opinion

Vassar College believes its plan to build a multi-use hotel and institute on its campus would further the school’s education goals and revitalize Arlington’s business district.

But the project, which would require the demolition of a faculty housing building that holds historic significance, has prompted mixed reaction from area residents and faculty.

And the college is facing zoning questions regarding the site of the planned building on the corner of Raymond Avenue, a one-lane road that cuts across campus, and College Avenue, which sits just south of a hub of off-campus activity boasting restaurants and shops.
