Shipping season delayed two weeks as waters recede slightly

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Lake Ontario water levels fell slightly during the month of February but remain nearly 4 inches above this same time in 2019, prompting regulators to delay the commercial shipping season as part of an effort to remove as much water as possible from the lake before April.

Lake Ontario reached a more than 100-year high of 249.08 feet in June last year after setting a previous record in May 2017. The lake started 2020 with higher water levels than either 2017 or 2019 and they have not fallen below historical averages since October 2018.
