Controversial housing project faces rocky road ahead

CANANDAIGUA, NY — Several residents sounded off last week on a $28 million rental townhome project proposed for state Route 364 — and a petition carrying nearly 900 hard-copy and online signatures opposing the proposal was presented — but the Canandaigua Town Planning Board held off on taking action on the plan, except to continue a public hearing through August.

ATL Contractors, which also is the developer of the 82-unit Keuka Shores development in Penn Yan, is seeking preliminary approvals for construction of 116 rental townhomes, two single-family residences, and 2,000 feet of a new dedicated road to serve the Canandaigua Shores project, which would be built on about 33 acres of land.

The developer also is seeking approval in the town of Hopewell on subdividing 11-plus acres for nine single-family residences, as well as for 1,700 square feet of the new dedicated road. The Hopewell Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing for July 26.
