Elmira, Binghamton to share $1.58 million state grant to combat neighborhood blight

The cities of Binghamton and Elmira will have more resources to address abandoned or rundown properties and other neighborhood blight issues thanks to a state grant.

State Attorney General Letitia James was in Elmira on Thursday to announce Elmira was awarded $1 million through the Cities for Responsible Investment and Strategic Enforcement (Cities RISE) program.

Binghamton will receive a $585,000 grant through the program, which is funded through settlements the attorney general’s office secured with major banks in the wake of the foreclosure crisis.
